Research Interests
Highly duplicated regions of human genome are hotspots for gene innovation, structural polymorphism and genomic diseases. However, the evolutionary origin and underlying biological mechanism of human segmental duplications are not well understood due to the complexity of sequence organization of these regions. Working with our collaborators (Pavel Pevzner and Haixu Tang), I am currently using a modified A-Brujin algorithm and sequence divergence analysis to define the ancestral loci (duplicons) of segmental duplications. Based on the information of ancestral loci, I also try to reconstruct the detailed evolutionary history and provide insight into the underlying biological mechanism of segmental duplications by evaluating both neutral and selectionist models for their origin.
